The Scythians wore two main types of high-status, iconic necklaces: the torc (or torque) and the pectoral. These pieces were not just ornaments; they were symbols of immense power, lineage, and social status worn by Scythian nobility.

  • Torc: A stiff, rigid, or sometimes thick and intertwined metal neck ring that was typically open-ended in the front. Scythian torcs are famous for their elaborately crafted ends (terminals), which often featured intricately detailed animal motifs like dragons, tigers, or miniature figures of Scythian riders.
  • Pectoral: A large, heavy, crescent-shaped breastplate/necklace that rested across the chest. The most famous example is the Golden Pectoral from Tovsta Mohyla (found in Ukraine). This masterpiece is divided into multiple detailed tiers showcasing daily Scythian life, mythical creatures, and animal battles.
